How much fluid does a cat need per day?
A cat needs about 40 to 60 ml of fluid per kilogram of body weight per day. For a 4 kg cat, that amounts to about 160 to 240 ml, from food and drink combined.

Wet food provides by far the most fluid. It consists largely of water, while dry food is almost dry, meaning the cat has to drink a lot extra.

Why do cats drink more from a drinking fountain?
Cats are attracted to running water. Moving water seems fresher and safer than a stagnant bowl, causing cats to spontaneously drink from it more often.
