How dangerous is a hot car for your dog?
“I’ll be right back” – five minutes quickly become fifteen. And those fifteen minutes can cost your dog its life. With the heat expected again in Belgium in the second half of July, the SmartPaw editorial team warns: never leave your dog alone in the car. We explain how quickly things go wrong and what you should do.

How quickly does a car get too hot for a dog?
Very quickly. At an outdoor temperature of 25°C, the temperature inside a car parked in the sun already rises to about 34°C within 10 minutes. After half an hour, it's well over 40°C, and after an hour, the interior can reach 47°C or higher. Leaving a window ajar or parking in the shade makes little difference.

Even “just for a moment” can be fatal. A dog can suffer a heatstroke in less than 15 minutes and die from it. In doubt? Leave your dog at home where it's cool.

What are the symptoms of heatstroke in dogs?
Look out for excessive panting, heavy drooling, a bright red tongue, weakness, stumbling, disorientation, vomiting, and eventually unconsciousness. At these signs, you must act immediately – every minute counts.
What to do with an overheated dog?
Immediately move the dog to a cool, shaded spot and give lukewarm (not ice-cold) water to drink. Cool the paw pads, chest, and belly with a wet, lukewarm cloth and call your vet. Never use ice-cold water, as it can constrict blood vessels and actually slow down cooling.

Can I leave my dog in the car if I park in the shade?
No. The shade shifts and the car will still heat up quickly. Never leave your dog unattended, not even in the shade.
Does opening a window help?
Barely. A stationary car in the sun often reaches 50°C, even with the windows slightly open.
What do I do if I see a dog in a hot car?
Call the police or animal ambulance. In extreme emergencies, if the dog is in mortal danger, you can intervene – but first, call for help.
From what temperature is it too hot to walk?
