From late August, forest paths are once again littered with acorns, chestnuts, and pine cones — and many dogs consider them great toys. However, not everything lying on the ground is harmless. Acorns contain tannic acid and are indeed poisonous, and wild chestnuts also don't belong in your dog's mouth.

Why are acorns toxic to dogs?
Acorns contain tannic acid, also known as tannin. This substance irritates the gastrointestinal lining and, in larger quantities, can damage the liver and kidneys. The greener and younger the acorn, the higher the content — and it's precisely these unripe acorns that fall in large numbers in August and September.
Small dogs are at the greatest risk: for a Chihuahua, a handful of acorns can be a significant dose, whereas a large German Shepherd might barely be affected.
Are chestnuts also toxic to dogs?
That depends on the type. Wild chestnuts (horse chestnuts, from the Aesculus tree) contain aesculin and cause the same symptoms as acorns. Sweet chestnuts, the edible kind, are not toxic — but raw and with their husk, they are difficult to digest and can cause intestinal obstruction.

What symptoms does a dog experience after eating acorns?
The first symptoms usually appear within a few hours to a day: abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, often followed by diarrhea. This can then be followed by lethargy, restlessness, loss of appetite, stiff muscles, or a bloated abdomen.
In case of a large amount of tannic acid, the mucous membranes may turn yellow (check the mouth or the whites of the eyes) — this indicates liver damage and is an emergency. A dog that stops urinating or drinks excessively also needs to see a vet immediately.
⚠️ Your dog has eaten acorns or wild chestnuts — what now?
Call your vet or the emergency service immediately, even if your dog still seems fine. The sooner they intervene (inducing vomiting, stomach pumping, activated charcoal), the lower the risk of damage. Never try to induce vomiting yourself with salt or other home remedies. If possible, bring information about how much your dog ate and from which tree.
How to prevent your dog from eating acorns?
- Train a solid "leave it" and "drop it" command. Practice this at home with toys before you need it in the forest.
- Bring alternatives. A ball or chew toy keeps their mouth busy; many dogs pick things up out of boredom.
- Choose your route carefully. Avoid avenues with oak and horse chestnut trees in September and October, especially with puppies.
- Walk your dog on a long leash if they are a known "grazer."
- Don't let your dog leave hungry. A dog that has just eaten picks up noticeably less.
