Hoe knip je de nagels van je kat?
Cats normally wear down their claws themselves, but indoor cats and older cats often do need a helping hand. Overly long claws get caught in carpets, grow into the paw pad, or make jumping painful. With the right technique, nail clipping is a two-minute job.

How often should you clip your cat's claws?
For most indoor cats, every 2 to 4 weeks is sufficient. Kittens and seniors grow or wear down differently: in older cats who climb and scratch less, claws often grow too long, sometimes into the paw pad. Therefore, check them every two weeks.
A simple test: do you hear your cat tapping on the laminate or parquet floor? Then the claws are too long.
What tools do you need?
A cat nail clipper with a small jaw — scissor type or guillotine type — plus a towel and some treats. Human nail clippers crush the claw and cause splitting.
Also have styptic powder (or cornstarch) ready in case you cut too short.
Where is the "quick" and how do you avoid it?
The quick is the pink, vascularized part inside the claw. With light-colored claws, you'll see it immediately; stay at least 2 millimeters below the pink. With dark claws, clip a very small piece at a time until you see a gray-white oval appear in the cut surface — then stop.
⚠️ Cut too short?
Stay calm. Press styptic powder or cornstarch with a cotton ball against the nail for a few seconds until the bleeding stops. If bleeding continues after 5 to 10 minutes or the paw becomes red and swollen, call your vet.
Step-by-step: how to clip claws
- Choose a moment when your cat is sleepy and content, for example, after eating.
- Place your cat on your lap or on a table, with its back against your stomach.
- Hold one paw and gently press on the pad: the claw will extend.
- Clip off the transparent tip, perpendicular to the claw.
- Reward with a treat after each claw or each paw.
- Stop in time. Two claws today and the rest tomorrow is fine.
💡 Tip: Get your cat used to you holding its paws outside of clipping sessions. A few seconds a day, followed by a reward, will make clipping much smoother later on.
What do you do with a cat that won't sit still?
Loosely wrap your cat in a towel, leaving one paw free at a time (the "burrito method"). If that doesn't work, spread it out over several days or ask your vet or groomer to demonstrate it once together.

Does a scratching post replace clipping?
Not entirely. Scratching removes the outer claw sheath, but it doesn't shorten the claw. A scratching post remains indispensable for your furniture and your cat's muscle tension.
What do you do with loose hairs and dirt after the grooming session?

Do you also need to clip your cat's hind claws?
Usually not. Hind claws wear down faster and grow slower. However, check them monthly.
What is the dewclaw (thumb claw) on a cat?
That's the claw higher up on the inside of the front paw. It never touches the ground and therefore grows long — don't forget it.
From what age do you clip a kitten's claws?
You can carefully practice from about 8 weeks. Starting early makes it easier for life.
Can you file a cat's claws instead of clipping them?
Yes, a nail file can be used for finishing to remove sharp edges, but clipping is faster and less stressful.
Does clipping claws hurt a cat?
