How do you brush your dog's teeth?
More than eighty percent of dogs over three years old have tartar or gingivitis. Yet only a small minority of owners brush their dog's teeth. Five minutes a day prevents pain, bad breath, and expensive dental cleanings under anesthesia. This is how you do it.

Why is brushing dogs' teeth so important?
Because plaque hardens into tartar within 24 to 48 hours, and you can't remove tartar at home. Untreated gingivitis causes pain, tooth loss, and bacteria that burden the heart, liver, and kidneys via the bloodstream.
How often should you brush your dog's teeth?
Every day is ideal, three times a week is the absolute minimum. Because plaque hardens within two days, longer breaks will largely negate the effect.
Which toothpaste and brush should you use?
Always use toothpaste specifically made for dogs, usually with chicken or beef flavor. Human toothpaste contains fluoride and sometimes xylitol, which are toxic to dogs. For the brush, choose a soft dog toothbrush or a finger brush.
⚠️ Never human toothpaste
Xylitol causes a life-threatening drop in blood sugar and liver damage in dogs. Baking soda and human mouthwash are also not recommended.
Step-by-step plan: how to teach your dog to brush teeth
- Day 1-2: let your dog lick the toothpaste from your finger. Only that, with lots of praise.
- Day 3-4: gently lift the lip and touch the gums with your finger. Reward.
- Day 5-6: rub your finger or finger brush over the canines for a few seconds.
- Day 7-10: introduce the toothbrush on one side of the mouth. Keep it short.
- Afterwards: brush in small circles at a 45-degree angle, from back to front, about 30 seconds per side.
Choose a quiet moment, preferably after a walk when your dog is tired and relaxed. Always stop at a positive moment, even if you've only done half of it.
đź’ˇ Tip: You can largely skip the inside of the teeth. The tongue keeps that side fairly clean; most tartar is on the outside of the molars.
What if your dog really doesn't allow brushing?
Then you build up further on habituation and combine with alternatives. If it still doesn't work after weeks, ask your vet for advice — sometimes there is underlying pain.

How does teeth brushing fit into the rest of the care?
It works best as a fixed part of a grooming routine: brushing, checking ears, checking nails, and brushing teeth.
